what exactly governor romney be doing differently right now? >> well, this is the criticism that the obama campaign has leveled at the romney campaign for not being detailed and specific enough. when it comes to iran, the president hasn't laid out a red line that he said clearly he would enforce. when asked to be precise about what it means for iran not to possess a nuclear weapon, the articulation of the red line, he's been vague and says he doesn't want to parse it further. i think there's a certain element of ambiguity about where you would draw the line precisely so as to avoid being trapped by it. but the other point to make is that president obama has had several years. during those years the options that he took or the choices that he took narrowed the options that he has today so one of the reasons why governor romney's approach to iran looked similar in some respects to president obama's is because governor romney would have done things very differently two or three years ago. governor romney maids a critique in june of 2009. that's wh

>> for me, it helped soften romney. to hear it right from the horse's mouth that he does believe in the role of government helping in day to day maybe not to the extent of obama does was helpful. >> i think that, you know, if we look at government in the, in the eyes of history there have been very important roles that government has played in changing, that various things that are very important to all of us today whether it be civil rights, whether it be, you know workplace safety, you know, how long you work every week, these kind of things are all things that were implemented from the top down and nobody here's going to say that the 40-hour work week was a bad idea. nobody's going to say that. that... that you know people of color can now vote. nobody's going to say that. it just, out of were they very, very popular things when they came out? no, they were not. voting right, voting rights act, civil rights act were very... very vilified in many parts of the country. but the idea that you know obamacare is not the an

i think the romney folks have to change that. >> woodruff: what do you think? i think that's right. he needs to do two things. he needs to be on the attack on the offense against president obama. he needs to tie people's unhappiness with the economy to obama's own policies because now we have a lot of people unhappy about the economy but not necessarily blaming the president for that. the other thing is he needs to convey to people that he understands something about the struggles of their lives because his biggest deficit in the polling that we do is that sense that he doesn't have a sense... he doesn't care about people like me. he doesn't understand the troubles and the problems that people like me have their lives. and that 47% video has been very damaging, i think, for governor romney on that point. he needs to do two things that are different and maybe hard to do. both of them simultaneously. >> woodruff: that's what i want to ask you. how much contradiction, how much of a tension do they feel in what he needs to do? >> this is so high-stakes for governor romney. this is a clo

this advertising the romney camp is doing, how effective it is? >> for one thing they're far behind in terms of spanish language ads, far behind the obama campaign. they've only spent about half as much as the obama campaign had. that number has rampd up dramatically. they say they're going to do a full ad blitz in the last month. they introduced a new ad today which attacks president obama for leaving a $6 trillion national they say for the children and grandchildren. they talk about, this is the spanish-language ad, they talk about how this is going to be a debt they're going to have to pay. they've also come up with some ads where they talk, where you have hispanic voters talking about why they feel disappointed in president obama. where they feel that his promises were not kept. so those are some of the things we're starting to see from them. things that seem a little bit more artful, that some analysts have told me that they think actually are more on the mark, might have more resonance with the hispanic community >> woodruff: very quickly. c
